Lecture on The Lost son of George Minne by Marjan Sterckx

On Sunday, November 2nd, Marjan Sterckx will give a lecture on The Lost Son by George Minne, on the occasion of the exhibition The Lost Son, which will be on view at MDD from September 21st to December 21st.

The exhibition features works by Minne from the museum’s own collection, complemented by a number of exceptional loans, including rarely seen sculptures and drawings. Central themes include mourning, corporeality, and emotional connection.

In 1931, Jules Dhondt and Irma Dhaenens lost their only son. Around the same time, sculptor George Minne unveiled The Lost Son, a poignant depiction of a father and son in an intense, intimate embrace that deviates from traditional biblical iconography.

Marjan Sterckx is Professor of Art History at Ghent University and leads the research group The Inside Story (ThIS). Her research focuses on the intersections of (sculptural) art, gender, and space.

This lecture is free with the purchase of an admission ticket.
