Lecture: Aesthetics and Landscape

In this lecture, Raphaël Van Lerberge explores the interaction between humans and the landscape over time. Through a series of aesthetically charged objects—ranging from a prehistoric battle axe (c. 2500 BCE) to paintings from 1609 and 1911, as well as a parchment map from 1644—a history of the Leie Valley and the Warande of Sint-Martens-Latem unfolds.

These objects demonstrate how human desires for beauty, order, and meaning not only represent the landscape but have also actively shaped it.

The lecture connects thematically to the current exhibition by Edith Dekyndt, where objects similarly serve as starting points for making larger stories tangible.

The lecture is free with the purchase of a museum ticket.
