Picture this: Mira Sanders

For her project at MDD, Mira Sanders explores the meaning of the museum and the symbolic value of this institution in society. She requested participation from all museums located within a radius of 300 km around Deurle that met certain specific criteria.

For this purpose, she designed a series of flags, each depicting a megaphone symbolizing communication. The hoisting of Mira Sanders’ flags is not a strategic or territorial gesture. Rather, it should be seen as an ironic or poetic act akin to planting a flag on the moon or at the North Pole. The flags were donated to the museums with the request to display them on a window or mast, visible to the public. The size of the flag is rather modest, making it unobtrusive, often discovered only by the more attentive passerby who will hopefully be surprised and curious about its meaning.

Thus, the flag becomes a means of communication between passersby and the museum. At the same time, it is also a symbol of communication among different contemporary art museums in Europe. A network structure between different institutions is visualized in this way. Mira Sanders thus explores the tension between art within the confines of the museum, art in public space, and the visibility of the museum in society.
