Empreintes de pinceau n°50 répétées à intervalles réguliers de 30 cm – Encore une histoire de portes, 2007

acrylic paint on panels

In the 1960s, Niele Toroni developed a working method that he continued to follow throughout his career: using a brush of 50 mm width to apply touches of paint at a distance of 30 cm. This brushstroke can be applied to canvas, paper, the floor, or in the case of MDD, to door panels.

Toroni first exhibited at MDD in 2000, with a large-scale solo exhibition. In 2007, as part of an exhibition of the Matthys-Colle collection at MDD, Toroni returned to the museum to place his 'empreintes' directly above the doors of the less spectacular areas of a museum: the toilets and office spaces. It is a response to a work that he had realised in 1978 - on the front and back of two sliding doors in the Matthys-Colle residence in Deurle.
