Derek Jarman
Filmscreening: Electric Fairy & Imagining October

British filmmaker and artist Derek Jarman is known for his experimental style and provocative themes. His short films, screened continuously during this weekend, illustrate his ability to depict powerful emotions and ideas in a short span of time, combined with aesthetic beauty and profound social commentary.

"Electric Fairy" (1971) is Derek Jarman's debut film, an experimental 6-minute work filmed on 16mm. This early film showcases Jarman's emerging avant-garde style, combining spontaneous action with carefully composed images. This rare gem in Jarman's filmography offers a glimpse into the themes and aesthetics that would later characterise his illustrious career.

"Imagining October" (1984) is a powerful short film made at the height of the Cold War. In this 26-minute film, Jarman explores political and artistic themes, inspired by the Russian avant-garde and the international tension of the time. With its distinctive visual style and symbolism, "Imagining October" offers a sharp reflection on the struggle between ideologies and the role of art in political struggles.
