Lecture on George Minne by Prof. Dr. Marjan Sterckx

On Sunday, November 2, Prof. Dr. Marjan Sterckx will deliver a lecture on George Minne, in connection with the exhibition The Prodigal Son, which is on view at MDD from September 21 to December 21.

The exhibition features works by Minne from the museum’s own collection, complemented by a number of exceptional loans, including rarely seen sculptures and drawings. Central themes include mourning, corporeality, and emotional connection.

In 1931, Jules Dhondt and Irma Dhaenens lost their only son. Around the same time, sculptor George Minne unveiled The Prodigal Son — a poignant depiction of a father and son in an intense, intimate embrace that deviates from traditional biblical iconography.

Marjan Sterckx is Professor of Art History at Ghent University and leads the research group The Inside Story (ThIS). Her research focuses on the intersections of (sculptural) art, gender, and space.

With thanks to Prof. Dr. Marjan Sterckx, Ghent University – Faculty of Arts and Philosophy, The Inside Story (ThIS).
