Michel Frère

The work of the Belgian artist Michel Frère is hardly known in Flanders. He passed away at the young age of 38 in 1999. Against the tide, he created large abstract and impasto paintings in the 1980s and 1990s. The numerous layers of paint make the works very heavy and are characterized by a complex texture.

Due to their monumental sizes and specific paint layers, his works always engage in an intriguing dialogue with daylight and with the architectural space. His paintings are simultaneously heavy as lead and feather-light, layered yet impenetrable.

The exhibition at MDD brings together, in addition to a series of paintings, some remarkable sculptures by Michel Frère.
