Andreas Slominski
Riding a Saddle Roof

Andreas Slominski is known for how he radically rethinks objects and situations by following his logic. His oeuvre consists of enigmatic structures that challenge the viewer to decipher the relationship between the title, the design, and the purpose of the object/artwork.

For his project Riding a Saddle Roof at Museum Dhondt-Dhaenens, Slominski was inspired by the modernist museum building with its flat roof, located in a residential area amidst family houses with typical saddle roofs and terracotta-coloured tiles. Slominski divorces the roof from its function—protection and insulation—to create a museum exhibition.

The tiles are used as painting objects, and the finishing materials of the roof become sculptures in the space. Often, Slominski causes something to happen in the exhibition space before the opening of the exhibition. These temporary actions are his way of charging the space and the installation with a story that ignites the fantasy or imagination of the spectator. Sometimes, he documents these actions in his exhibitions through photographs or objects resulting from said actions.

The action for the opening of the exhibition at MDD also explains the title of the exhibition. Slominski, through his ability to disrupt meanings and build exhibitions in an associative manner, creates an experience that is hilarious, obscene, oppressive, or alienating, yet also quite normal.
