Charles-René Callewaert

1893—1936

Charles-René Callewaert was a maverick at the Ghent Academy, where he studied for five years under Jean Delvin and George Minne. In his oeuvre there is a clear influence of the changing environments in which he worked and lived. He wandered through the bleak and often unsafe alleys of the Patershol, where he had his studio, and was inspired by what he saw in the streets. De Daken (1923) shows the view from his painting room in the former Carmelite convent in the historic city center.
