Here, there, elsewhere – Portraits of a landscape

At the invitation of the Municipality of Sint-Martens-Latem, MDD is proud to present a selection of exceptional works from its collection at the nearby Museum Gust De Smet.

The selection illustrates how artists incorporate changes in their surroundings, the political environment, and social trends into their art. Where one artist chooses the beauty and tranquillity of the Lys landscape, another chooses the melancholy of a metropolis.

Artists such as Frits Van den Berghe, Gust De Smet, Jenny Montigny, Ramah, and Charles-René Callewaert were each influenced in their own way by the everyday life and natural environment that surrounded them. They resolutely chose their own and new approach to painting against the background of dominant foreign movements and the horror of war. Painting became a way of structuring the changing world around them and expressing it through highly personal feelings.
