On Kawara
1966

On Kawara is regarded as one of the most significant artists of the second half of the twentieth century. The exhibition at the Museum Dhondt-Dhaenens focuses on his production in 1966, a pivotal year within On Kawara's body of work and also the starting year of the Today Series (1966—2013).

While Kawara is recognized as a key figure in the European and American conceptual art movement, his artistic practice extends beyond the typical strict constraints that characterized conceptualism. The rules governing his work were indeed rigid, but due to their dependence on time, there was a high degree of unpredictability at play.

The core of the exhibition comprises 51 paintings from the Today series of the year 1966, most of which have not been previously exhibited.

This marks the first institutional solo presentation in Belgium since the exhibition On Kawara, 1973 - Production of a Year at the Palace of Fine Arts in Brussels in 1975.

Simultaneously, the major retrospective On Kawara - Silence is taking place at the R. Solomon Guggenheim Museum in New York (06.02.2015—03.05.2015).

While the American exhibition provides a comprehensive overview of the artist's work throughout his entire career, On Kawara – 1966 focuses on one of the most crucial years in his oeuvre.
