Maaike Schoorel
Woning van Wassenhove

Artist Maaike Schoorel (Santpoort, 1973) turns the concept of Innerspaces of the Biennale ‘inside out’ with work shown in three different places.

She not only exhibits work in Museum Dhondt-Dhaenens but also in the house itself and initiated an exhibition project at Mendes Wood DM in Brussels.

In the Woning Van Wassenhove, the artist will present a series of works inspired by two residency periods in the house. During her last stay, Schoorel took several photographs as preliminary studies for her still lifes. The onset of the corona pandemic and the experience of working and living alone in the concrete house also tinted her perception of the objects within this physical and mental space.

The subjects of her paintings are both recognisable and elusive, somewhere on the edge of disappearance where images seem to dissolve into the canvas. A certain slowness and attention of the viewer is required to experience this paradoxical movement, the sudden appearance of a motif that is both fleeting and permanent.
