Open call Writing Residency

Museum Dhondt-Dhaenens (MDD) and MORPHO are jointly launching another international writing residency for visual artists in the Woning Van Wassenhove. An architectural masterpiece by Juliaan Lampens, the Woning offers a splendid isolation in a quiet residential area near Ghent. Building on MDD’s engagement with the Belgian avant-garde who secluded themselves in this painter’s village in the 20th century, we are launching an open call for artists who write and want to develop a new project here.

Special attention will be given to projects that mark a turning point in the artist’s practice and in which writing plays a central role (in the development and/or presentation of the project). Moreover, the museum supports the presentation of the project at the end or after of the residency. We are therefore calling for project proposals that can result in a public moment that allows a direct exchange or has a participatory character (performance, lecture, workshop...).

The residency in Sint-Martens-Latem, Belgium, will last 4 consecutive weeks, in the period from 1 to 28 February 2024.

For whom?

  • This call is open to visual artists for whom writing is an essential part of their practice.
  • The call is for individuals, collectives cannot participate.
  • There is no restriction in terms of nationalities, but we take sustainable travel into account where possible.
  • You are legally permitted to travel, stay and work in Belgium during the residency.
  • We do our best to facilitate the resident’s needs, but due to the specific architecture (stairs, no lift), the property is not suitable for all conditions.
  • Candidates who previously did a residency through MORPHO are not eligible.

The residency offers

  • Private heritage house with bedroom, kitchen, bathroom and living room for one person.
  • Utilities, internet connection, use of a bicycle.
  • Artistic guidance by external guests relevant to the artist's project.
  • Practical and artistic support from MDD’s team.

Financial support

  • Contribution to travel and visa costs (up to €1,000 incl. VAT).
  • Daily allowance of €40 per day (incl. VAT).
  • Production budget for a presentation event in 2024 (up to €2,000 incl. VAT).

Selection criteria

  • A good match between what the project requires and what the residency offers.
  • The relevance of the artist's practice to the context of the museum and the residency.
  • The impact the residency is likely to have on the artist’s development.

How to apply?

  • Project proposal, referring to the form of the proposed public moment (max. 500 words).
  • Motivation letter, elaborating on how the residency supports the candidate's practice at this stage of their career (max. 500 words).

  • Portfolio of works and CV of the artist (max. 10 pages).
