Picture this: Griet Dobbels

The project that Griet Dobbels presents this autumn at Museum Dhondt-Dhaenens can be seen as a snapshot of an ongoing artistic process. With great imagination, she explores the possibilities of various techniques, materials, media, ... The freshness with which she surprises the viewer each time is touching and poetic, simultaneously a physical and mental experience.

For several years, Griet Dobbels has been working on creating a collection of edible books. She asked individuals active in different disciplines (culinary arts, literature, visual arts) to articulate their eating experiences. These experiences are then printed with edible inks on edible paper and bound in an edible book cover. The project she has created for MDD is a continuation of this quest for new ways to experience and consume art.

An immense roll of edible paper is printed with texts. It is centrally positioned and partly unrolled. The drawings and video not only document alternative forms of presentation but also the potential consumption and digestion of the texts, letters, meanings, ...

In this way, Griet Dobbels creates a tension between the pleasure of looking and the temptation to taste. The notion of vulnerability is not limited solely to the materials used but also to the way the work positions itself as a sculpture. Dobbels goes to the extreme in seeking proportions between literature and sculpture, balancing between the ephemeral and the eternal.
